ATI Radeon HD 4890 vs. Nvidia GeForce GTX 275

Benchmarks: Overclocking Performance

We had already anticipated the Radeon HD 4890 would be a great overclocker from numerous early reports online. Our final stable overclock of 970MHz for the core and 1165MHz for the memory is impressive enough, just slightly shy of the 1GHz core clock speed.

The GeForce GTX 275 did not fair too bad either with an extra 109MHz squeezed out of the core (741MHz) and a final 1278MHz for the memory.

Both the Radeon and GeForce cards were overclocked using the stock coolers which in these Asus products abide by the reference models from each GPU manufacturer. Using an aftermarket cooler will likely bring some extra OC headroom but perhaps more importantly, improved temperature levels and less noise (see next page for more).

More detail on how these overclocks affected actual performance output is below.

Both graphics cards received an 18% performance boost at 2560x1600 in UT3 thanks to the overclock. The Radeon HD 4890 rendered an additional 7fps, while the GeForce GTX 275 managed to produce 8fps more.

Unfortunately for the Radeon HD 4890 the extra 18% performance made it just 1fps faster than the stock GeForce GTX 275. The GeForce GTX 275 overclock on the other hand allowed it to match the performance of the GeForce GTX 285 and Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics cards.

The Radeon HD 4890 didn't see much of a gain in Left 4 Dead when overclocked. The result at 2560x1600 was just an 8% increase, and perhaps this explains why the Radeon HD 4890 does not fair very well in this game to begin with. The Radeon HD 4890 was barely faster than the Radeon HD 4870 in Left 4 Dead and overclocking it further didn't help greatly.

The GeForce GTX 275 received a 17% performance boost at 2560x1600 which again allowed it to overcome the GeForce GTX 285 and perform on par with the Radeon HD 4870 X2. Given that the core clock speed of the GeForce GTX 275 has been boosted by ~17%, and the memory frequency has been increased by 13%, we are seeing maximum returns from this graphics card.

How To Make Wifi Signal Booster (DIY)

As I promise before (Cheap Solution for Wireless Signal Booster (Homemade Wireless Antenna)) I would like to give instructions on how to create your own wireless signal booster. Right now i am using free Wireless connection from school 500 meters from my house. Before this I couldn’t even connect to Google due to terrible wireless signal. In this tutorial I am using Aztech 802.11b/g USB Adaptor. If you have wireless pci card, the procedure still the same. By doing this you can increase your wireless signal up to 12Db. If the signal too low you may need a monitoring software like netstumbler.There are few products out there that you can purchase but that’s not cool at all. Do it yourself!

Building a wireless signal booster DIY style. Tool that you need are Cheap USB wireless modem, antenna holder, aluminum foil and USB extension cable. I tried using the long extension cable but it does no detect my USB wireless devices , maybe because not enough power supply.

Step 1 The Reflector I found pre-made template on the internet for this.Downoad this http://www.imod.co.za/wifi.pdf I just doubled the scale to fit my cardboard. Once you already downloaded the template cut it into the shape. I am using plastic file’s case. You may use cardboard get the cheapest one lol. I cut the square hole in the middle to fit the Aztech wireless USB adapter.

Step 2 Cover with the aluminum foil. Once we the template is ready. Go to the kitchen and grab the aluminum foil. Ask your mom first! Cover the template with aluminum foil and use your sister’s uhu glue.

Step 3 Antenna Holder Get some material for antenna holder. I am using curtain’s holder for this (no idea what’s the words lol).

Last step Mount your USB and to test the correct position and direction for the antenna.

Adjust the position of your wireless antenna booster so you will get the maximum signal gain. This is the difficult part since we don’t know from where the signal coming from. You can use this also as to increase your router signal. This is my result.

Look at the SMKKB_AP1 the gain is from 7% to 29% the gain is quadrupled plus I got 2 more signals. Good luck!. Experimenting is the best part in this tutorial. If you want to get better wireless signal booster, additional software might help.

Intel Atom + GeForce 9400M = Actual Gaming on Netbooks

Remember when we were talking about gaming on netbooks? Sure, it’s technically possible, but you ain’t going to get a zippy video card in one unless you solder it onto the exterior. Even then, how much fun can you have with your paltry Atom processor?

Not a whole lot. In my own mind, fun is actually quantifiable in terms of frames per second. With a conventional Atom processor you can only have 10-20 FPS of fun. With Nvidia’s upcoming Ion chipset your fun should jump above 30 FPS on Call of Duty 4, The Witcher, Prince of Persia, and basically anything that’s not Crysis (Crysis will run, but it will resemble 1990’s Eye of the Beholder).

Measuring fun in FPS is probably a sad reflection on my generation’s media addiction, but frankly, I don’t have time for introspection when goods like the Nvidia Ion are competing for my attention.

The Ion is basically your standard Atom processor doubled up with an Nvidia GeForce 9400M video card. It would seem that my prayers have not gone unheard, spiraling endlessly through an empty universe. Instead, some benevolent force or other has responded to my desperate pleas. What the Ion means for netbooks is HD media and full-on gaming.

Yeah. Actual gaming. Like, you know, wandering the frozen wastes of Borean Tundra, oohing and awing at meat fountains, travelling through time to kidnap Einstein … Actual gaming on a netbook!

Oh yeah, and if you like movies, 1080p resolution is possible on the Ion, but realistically, do you really want that many p on a lil’ 9-inch screen?

The only downside to the supercharged Ion chipset concerns battery life. As you can imagine, running a GeForce 9400M sucks the juice from a 4 or 6-cell battery pretty quickly.

The Ion should be available midway through 2009 and will cost a bit more than the standard Atom setup. But considering the massive performance increase the Ion will bring, I certainly won’t complain about paying a few bucks more.

I’ve been putting my Asus N10J-A2 through its paces this week with SiSoft Sandra 2009. Here are some benchmark screenshots I took during the process.

All the benchmarks were taken with the netbook on AC power and the Power4Gear Hybrid software on High performance with Turbo enabled. (Turbo gives a 10% overclock.

This is the task manager showing the current resource usage. At idle the N10J would sit about 50% ram usage and cpu usage would bounce between 5-10%.

These are the GPU Rendering and Processing benchmarks run in Sisoft Sandra.

CPU Arithmetic benchmark. It’s a little bit above SiSofts included N270 benchmark due to Turbo mode being enabled.

This is the Cache and Memory bandwidth benchmark.

And finally this is a Power Management Efficiency benchmark.

In conclusion,
I really think the CPU is the bottleneck in this system. The GeForce 9300M is not a top gaming card but after trying a whole bunch of different settings and resolutions in Need for Speed Carbon I could not for the life of me get the FPS above 25-30. Switching res and graphics options didn’t appear to raise or drop the FPS much at all. It would really be nice to upgrade the Atom N270 but I’m not sure thats possible on this motherboard, I will have to do some more research on that.
